About a week ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kimberley and checking out her stunning custom made gowns. Kimberley has been creating bridal and special occasion couture full time since 2012 in the Hills District of Sydney.
How long have you been in the dressmaking business?
I’ve been sewing and creating gowns privately for close to 15 years and made the move to open to the public two years ago. I started quite young and fell in love with creating couture garments instantly.
What makes your business different?
After five years of study I started off my career in the costume design industry which provided me with a higher level of couture skills than other industries as the garments are individually tailored and created to last through hundreds (often more) of performances and shows. Working in exciting costume departments such as The Great Gatsby, Opera Australia and a few productions for Channel Nine gave me further skills necessary to create stunning gowns. Aside from that; I absolutely love what I do and that love shines through in everything I create.
What trends do you think are going to be big in 2015?
Illusion necklines are definitely here to stay for a little while longer, and tea-length gowns are making an exciting return! Brides love the idea of being able to move freely with no long skirt and having the opportunity to wear their gown again. Slim-line gowns and bias-cut skirts are creeping back into fashion ready for relaxed beach and garden weddings in Summer.
What is your favourite style of dress?
My personal favourite style is something slim-line; I love the idea of a light weight skirt, intricate embellishment and comfort. After all, you end up wearing it for a whole day and night!
What do you love about your business?
I am fortunate to be able to say I love all aspects of my business, however my absolute favourite is seeing the excitement and happiness on the face of one of my beautiful brides as she watches her dream gown come to life before her eyes. I feel incredibly fortunate to play such an important role on such an important day in someone’s life.
What do you find challenging?
The absolute hardest part is saying goodbye to each dress! On average I spend about 100 hours with each gown lovingly sewing, beading, and tailoring to perfection so it’s safe to say I feel a personal attachment to each one!
I hope you enjoyed this little peek into the beautiful business of couture gowns, thanks so much to Kimberley for taking the time to meet with me.
